Pitch Black chase cards: Mega Darkrai is close to half the set

Pitch Black chase cards: Mega Darkrai ex, Morpeko ex, Mega Zeraora ex and Gwynn

Pitch Black came out on 17 July 2026 in the Mega Evolution series, with 120 cards: 84 in the main numbering and 36 above it. It is legal in Standard, and it is very top-heavy. About four fifths of its entire market value sits in ten cards, 84 of its 120 cards sell for under a dollar, and close to half of the whole set's value is one Pokémon printed four times.

The ten that carry the set

4 Mega Zeraora ex #114 Special Illustration Rare GIDORA $52.33

8 Misty's Vitality #111 Ultra Rare En Morikura $12.81
9 Mega Darkrai ex #101 Ultra Rare 5ban Graphics $8.95
10 Slowbro #90 Illustration Rare Mékayu $8.97

Mega Darkrai ex is close to half the set

Mega Darkrai ex is printed four times in Pitch Black, and all four are the same card in play: 280 HP and the same two attacks, Dusk Raid and Abyss Eye. Together those four printings account for close to half of the market value of all 120 cards.

Worth noticing: the Special Illustration Rare sells above the Mega Hyper Rare. At the top of this set, the illustration is what the market pays for.

Two Supporters in the top rarity

Two of the set's six Special Illustration Rares are not Pokémon at all but Supporter cards. Gladion's Final Battle is $27.38, and Gwynn is $31.04. Gwynn is a clean example of what rarity does to one card: the same Supporter is $0.36 as an Uncommon, $7.27 as an Ultra Rare and $31.04 as a Special Illustration Rare.

The most valuable Ultra Rare in the set is a Supporter too: Misty's Vitality at $12.81.

Illustration Rares: the art without the price

All eleven Illustration Rares in Pitch Black are full-art versions of a regular Common, Uncommon or Rare from the same set, with identical game text. If you want the artwork without chasing the top of the set, these are the most affordable way in. The five highest priced:

Card Regular Illustration Rare
Slowbro $0.25 Uncommon #30 $8.97 #90
Goldeen $0.23 Common #13 $5.36 #87
Primarina $0.30 Rare #20 $3.21 #88
Armarouge $0.25 Rare #12 $2.57 #86
Fomantis $0.20 Common #3 $2.52 #85

No pattern versions this time

Unlike Ascended Heroes and Prismatic Evolutions, Pitch Black has no Poké Ball or Energy Symbol pattern versions of its cards. TCGplayer lists all 120 cards and not a single pattern variant, so the set's value lives entirely in its numbered rarities.

Sealed product, and a comparison worth making

The Booster Box is $192.26, the Elite Trainer Box is $69.22, the Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box is $124.69, and the Booster Bundle is $39.45.

Set the booster box beside the set's best card. The box is $192.26. Mega Darkrai ex #116 on its own is $193.20. At the time of writing they cost about the same, which is worth knowing before you decide whether you are opening for the fun of it or for one specific card.
