Secret Lair, explained: how drops work, how to buy them, and where the value is

Secret Lair cards: Subtlety, Fury, Solitude, Smothering Tithe, Grief

Secret Lair is Wizards of the Coast's line of limited-run Magic drops: small themed sets of cards, usually with new art, sold for a limited time. Since December 2019 there have been 419 of them, and the line has become the place Magic goes for crossovers, artist showcases and some of the most expensive new printings in the game. Here is how it works, what seven years of drops look like, and where the value has been.

The short answer

  • What a drop is: a handful of cards around one theme, usually four to six, and in four drops out of five there is a foil edition alongside the regular one.
  • How to buy one: from Wizards' own store, MagicSecretLair.com, on the drop's sale day. Sales go live at 9 a.m. Pacific, and a standard drop costs $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil.
  • What a typical drop's cards are worth on their own: on 28 October 2026, the middle drop's singles added up to $58.40 at market.
  • Where the big money is: the bonus cards. All ten of the most expensive Secret Lair printings are bonus cards, led by Mana Vault at $3,118.88.
  • Want one card, not the drop? Every Secret Lair card has its own page with its price; start from the Secret Lair page, which lists every drop, newest first.

How Secret Lair works

Each drop is a small set built around an idea: an artist, a joke, a franchise, a single creature type drawn a dozen ways. Almost all of the cards are existing Magic cards in new art, often with new frames or foil treatments, so they play like any other copy of the same card. Only 66 of the 1,742 different cards in Secret Lair made their debut there. Most drops come in two editions, a regular one and a foil one. 337 of the 419 drops in our records have a foil edition, and 18 exist only in foil.

Drops arrive in batches, and some are much bigger than a handful of cards. A few are complete decks: ten drops run to 60 cards or more, and nine of those are exactly 100 cards. There are also bonus cards, extra printings that came along with certain drops, and as the next sections show, those are where many of the highest prices sit.

How to buy a Secret Lair drop

Wizards sells drops on its own store, MagicSecretLair.com, often several at once in a Superdrop: a batch of drops that goes on sale together on one announced day. Here is how a sale works, from Wizards' own instructions for its two most recent Superdrops.

  • Join the pre-queue. The sale goes live at 9 a.m. Pacific, and a pre-queue opens an hour earlier, at 8 a.m. To join it, add any product to your cart and go to checkout.
  • Your place in line. When the sale starts, everyone already in the pre-queue is given a random spot in line. Anyone who gets to checkout after 9 a.m. joins the queue in the order they arrive.
  • The price. A standard drop is $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil, and a Superdrop also comes in bundles. The Corn Maze Superdrop's everything bundle, all sixteen editions of its eight drops, was $539.99: $19.85 less than buying them one at a time.
  • Shipping and extras. Orders over $99.00 ship free. The Corn Maze Superdrop also added a foil Maze of Ith for each $199.00 spent, while supplies lasted.

Can a drop sell out? Yes. Since January 2024 most drops are printed before the sale, a limited print run, which gets them to you faster but means a popular one can sell out before its sale ends. A few are still printed to order during an ordering window (Wizards explained the change here).

Missed a drop? Once it ships, its cards turn up as singles and its sealed editions on the secondary market. Every Secret Lair card has its own page here with its current price, and the Secret Lair sealed index lists each drop's regular and foil editions.

What is on sale next

As of 28 October 2026, the next sale is Set Phasers to Superdrop on 9 November 2026: five Star Trek drops, with a sixth still to be revealed, at the standard $29.99 non-foil and $39.99 foil.

The one before it, the Corn Maze Superdrop, sold on 12 October: three Jim Henson's Labyrinth drops, KPop Demon Hunters: How It's Done, Marvel: Zombies, Artist Series: Véronique Meignaud, Manufactured Grounds by See Machine and Peace, Love, & Treefolk. All eight are already in the card records, dated 14 December.

Seven years of drops

The line started with seven drops in December 2019 and grew fast. 2022 was the busiest year so far, with 92 drops. More than a quarter of all drops, 114 of 419, feature another franchise, from Jaws and Fallout to Hatsune Miku, and the art comes from more than 800 different artists. Each year below opens that year's drops on our Secret Lair page.

Year Drops
2026 72
2025 84
2024 57
2023 54
2022 92
2021 33
2020 20
2019 7

The drops whose cards add up to the most

A simple way to size up any drop is to add up what its cards sell for on their own. Across the 409 drops where every card has a market price (leaving out the full decks), the middle one came to $58.40 on 28 October 2026. These ten came to the most:

Drop Released Cards Singles on 28 Oct
Dan Frazier's Mox Box September 2023 3 $464.20
Through the Wormhole Galaxy December 2023 5 $401.35
Look at the Kitties November 2022 4 $293.80
The Princess Bride November 2023 9 $270.40
Burning Revelations January 2024 5 $262.74
Here Be Dragons June 2022 6 $259.85
City Styles April 2023 5 $245.87
Jaws: Terror of Amity Island October 2025 5 $228.47
Goblin & Squabblin' August 2023 5 $223.42
Purrfection October 2021 4 $220.58

The top two show the two ways a small drop gets expensive. Dan Frazier's Mox Box is just three cards, all illustrated by Dan Frazier: Mox Opal ($366.13), Mox Tantalite ($24.31) and Sol Ring ($72.04). Through the Wormhole Galaxy is five of the most-played cards in Commander in galaxy foil, led by Sol Ring at $167.69. One is rare cards; the other is staples everyone plays, in a treatment people chase.

These totals are what the cards sold for on 28 October 2026, added up, not what the drops cost new, and not a promise about where they go next.

The most expensive Secret Lair cards

Look at single printings instead of drops and the picture changes: all ten of the most expensive Secret Lair printings are bonus cards.

Card Artist Kind Price
Mana Vault #796★ AKQA bonus card $3,118.88
Snapcaster Mage #808 Raita Kazama bonus card $1,750.08
Swords to Plowshares #713 Justin Hernandez & Alexis Hernandez bonus card $1,701.98
Subtlety #7005 Luisa J. Preissler bonus card $970.56
Counterspell #SCTLR Mark Poole bonus card $900.00
Smothering Tithe #7009 Tyler Walpole bonus card $845.79
Solitude #7004 Alexander Mokhov bonus card $858.75
Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite #811 Josh Newton & Scott Okumura bonus card $694.66
Fury #7007 Joshua Raphael bonus card $695.01
Grief #7006 Anna Pavleeva bonus card $698.69

These are thin markets: a single printing of a bonus card may have only a few copies for sale at any time, so one sale can move its price a long way.

The card Secret Lair prints most

Leaving out basic lands, the card that appears in the most drops is Sol Ring: it is in 32 of them, twice as many as the next two, Arcane Signet and Lightning Greaves (16 each). Secret Lair has printed 31 different versions of it. The cheapest of them sells for $5.57 and the most expensive for $167.69, so if you want a Secret Lair Sol Ring, which version you pick matters far more than the card.

The full decks

Some drops are whole decks rather than a handful of cards:

The newest drops

Secret Lair keeps coming: 72 drops so far in 2026, most recently Secret Gallery: Atlanta in October. We covered the August and September drops card by card in Secret Lair drops, August and September 2026, and the Secret Lair page adds every new drop as it appears in the card records, with each card's price.

Secret Lair questions

When do Secret Lair drops go on sale?

At 9 a.m. Pacific on the day Wizards announces, with a pre-queue from 8 a.m. Superdrops are announced ahead of time on Wizards' news page.

How much does a Secret Lair drop cost?

A standard drop in the two most recent Superdrops was $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil. Whole Superdrops also come as bundles.

Can you buy a drop after its sale?

Not from Wizards once its sale has ended or it has sold out. After that, sealed copies and the cards themselves trade on the secondary market, and we list both.

Are a drop's cards worth more than it costs?

Often, not always. On 28 October 2026, across the 409 drops where every card has a market price, the middle drop's singles added up to $58.40, against $29.99 for a non-foil drop today. The totals run from $9.37 to $464.20.

How to shop Secret Lair here

The Secret Lair page lists every drop, newest first and one year per page, with each card's art and price and what the drop's singles add up to. Type a card name into its filter to see every drop that card appears in. Where we have a page for the sealed drop, its regular or foil edition is one click away, and every card links to its own page, with ours when we have it in stock.

Card prices are TCGplayer market prices, refreshed nightly, for each printing's regular finish (foil where there is no regular one). Drop totals and the typical drop are dated: they are sums of those prices on 2 November 2026. Drop lists come from MTGJSON, card facts from Scryfall. Sale times, prices and print runs are from Wizards of the Coast: Set Phasers to Superdrop, Corn Maze Superdrop and Speeding Up Secret Lair Shipping.
