Reality Fracture came out on 2 October, and its first 13 days of prices are in. Here are the cards worth the most right now, why the special versions cost what they do, and what a Play or Collector Booster Box actually holds. For that last part we opened 20,000 of each, in simulation, using the set's published pack odds and today's market prices.
The short version
- The most valuable card right now is The Theorist, Jace Beleren in Japan Showcase fracture foil, at $496.62.
- The Japan Showcase fracture foils fill eight of the top ten. Each one turns up in about 1 in 80 Collector Booster Boxes.
- The best card you can open in a Play Booster is The Theorist, Jace Beleren, $41.28 for the regular version, in about 1 in 5 Play Booster Boxes.
- A Play Booster Box ($135.21 on Mana Pool) held $176.94 of cards on average at market prices, but only $86.81 you could realistically sell.
- A Collector Booster Box ($453.85) held $320.58 on average, and 1 in 5 boxes had a card worth $100 or more.
The most valuable Reality Fracture cards
Every one of the top ten is a special version that comes only in Collector Boosters. The last column is how often a Collector Booster Box holds that exact card, from our simulation.
| Card | Version | Price | Collector box odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Theorist, Jace Beleren | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $496.62 | 1 in 80 |
| Return to the Light Realms | facet foil shattered mirror | $400.32 | 1 in 200 |
| Hexhaven Invigorator | facet foil shattered mirror | $407.29 | 1 in 190 |
| Kwia Vigorbloom | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $250.82 | 1 in 80 |
| Emrakul, the Exigent Doom | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $346.39 | 1 in 80 |
| Codie, Ravenous Codex | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $163.61 | 1 in 90 |
| Aerid Konstrari | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $133.66 | 1 in 90 |
| Ingris Stingerquill | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $185.97 | 1 in 90 |
| Uldaros Theorix | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $128.28 | 1 in 80 |
| Gardenize | Japan Showcase, fracture foil | $154.50 | 1 in 80 |
| Kindred Judgment | facet foil shattered mirror | $118.65 | 1 in 100 |
| Rise of the Deathbringer | facet foil shattered mirror | $107.83 | 1 in 110 |
These are thin markets. A card printed in a few thousand copies, 13 days after release, has had only a handful of sales, and one sale can move its price a long way in either direction.
Why the special versions cost so much
Facet foil shattered mirrors. Thirteen cards in the set have a shattered mirror version: five rares and eight mythics. The non-foil ones can turn up in any booster. The facet foil ones come only in Collector Boosters, always in English, and Wizards printed about 6,000 of each rare and 3,000 of each mythic. Our simulation found the facet foil Return to the Light Realms, at $400.32, in about 1 in 200 Collector Booster Boxes.
Japan Showcase. Ten cards get Japan Showcase versions in Collector Boosters: in traditional foil in 9% of packs, and in fracture foil in just 1%. That 1% is split ten ways, so each fracture foil, like Kwia Vigorbloom at $250.82, is a long shot.
The headliner. Bloodline Recollector has a double rainbow foil version serialized to 500 copies, in Collector Boosters only. None has a market price yet.
The cards people play
The regular printings are the versions any booster can hold. The six most valuable right now:
- The Theorist, Jace Beleren $41.28
- Hexhaven Invigorator $21.98
- Emrakul, the Exigent Doom $14.14
- Ajani Unrelenting $12.97
- Darklight Phoenix $6.71
- Craterclaw Colossus $9.11
Play Boosters also carry the Special Guests: ten reprints in panoramic borderless art, one in every 55 packs. The most valuable is Eye of Ugin $27.00; about 1 in 19 Play Booster Boxes has one.
What's in the packs
A Play Booster holds 14 cards: five or six commons, an uncommon, a slot that can be either, three echoed-pair slots (both versions of one character, plus one version of another), one rare or mythic, one traditional foil of any rarity and a land. The rare slot is a mythic about one time in seven.
A Collector Booster holds 15 cards: four foil commons, two foil uncommons, three foil echoed-pair slots, a foil tower basic land, a foil rare or mythic, a non-foil braintwister or Commander card, two non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, and one foil Booster Fun rare or mythic. That last slot is where the Japan Showcase, facet foil and headliner cards live.
What a box is really worth
We opened 20,000 Play Booster Boxes and 20,000 Collector Booster Boxes in simulation, using MTGJSON's record of the set's pack makeups and every card's Mana Pool market price. Each box gets two numbers. Market value counts every card at its market price, bulk included. Sellable value counts only the cards worth $1 or more, less 13% in selling fees, because a stack of ten-cent commons is not money you will ever see.
| Play Booster Box | Collector Booster Box | |
|---|---|---|
| Box price (Mana Pool market) | $135.21 | $453.85 |
| Cards inside at market, average | $176.94 | $320.58 |
| Typical box (median) | $166.16 | $292.60 |
| Middle 80% of boxes | $128.53–$240.46 | $205.28–$459.99 |
| Boxes worth more than they cost, at market | 84% | 11% |
| Sellable value, average | $86.81 | $245.57 |
| Boxes whose sellable cards beat the price | 12% | 5.6% |
| Boxes with a $100+ card | none possible | 1 in 5 |
Our take. The Play Booster Box is the way to play this set. On paper, 84% of boxes hold more than they cost. But most of that is commons and uncommons you would keep or bulk out: sell only the good cards and you clear around $86.81.
The Collector Booster Box is a lottery ticket at this price. The average box returns about 71% of what it costs at market. About 1 in 5 has a $100 card, and a specific facet foil mythic is a far longer shot than that.
If you want a particular card, buy the single. It will almost always cost less than chasing it.
Two limits on these numbers. Real boxes are printed and packed in runs, so the packs in one box are not quite independent of each other. And 22 printings, the serialized headliner among them, have no market price yet and count as $0 here, so if anything these box values lean low.
