Final Fantasy chase cards a year on: you pay for the foil, not the card

Final Fantasy chase cards: surge foil Sephiroth, Cloud and Y'shtola, Chocobo track foil Vivi Ornitier, and Rhystic Study from Through the Ages

Final Fantasy came out on 13 June 2025, alongside Final Fantasy Commander (486 cards, including four Commander decks) and the 65-card Through the Ages sheet. More than a year on, where its money sits says a lot about how to buy it.

The short answer

  • Buy now or wait? More of the set is rising than falling. Since we started logging it in late August, 116 printings have risen more than 10% and 78 have fallen more than 10%.
  • You pay for the foil, not the card. The same Y'shtola, Night's Blessed costs $5.23 as a regular card and $1,298.36 as a borderless surge foil — on 26 October 2026, the most valuable printing in the Commander set.
  • Best value for players: the Commander staples reprinted in the Final Fantasy Commander decks. Sol Ring, Swords to Plowshares and Lightning Greaves are among them.

Since late August

We record every printing's Mana Pool market price each night. For almost all of the Final Fantasy sets that record starts in late August, and by 26 October 2026, 116 printings had risen more than 10% while 78 had fallen more than 10%. Here are the biggest moves among printings that started at $20 or more:

Card Late Aug 26 Oct Change
Sram, Senior Edificer Through the Ages #3 · borderless $24.97 $40.13 +61%
Rydia, Summoner of Mist Final Fantasy #504 · extended art $32.98 $46.25 +40%
Serah Farron Final Fantasy #506 · extended art $23.68 $33.18 +40%
Balthier and Fran Final Fantasy #538 · borderless surge foil $22.18 $30.03 +35%
Clever Concealment Final Fantasy Commander #236 · surge foil $39.16 $24.99 −36%
Nibelheim Aflame Final Fantasy #339 · borderless $24.79 $18.26 −26%
Tifa Lockhart Final Fantasy #473 · extended art $35.07 $26.15 −25%

The top end of this set trades on a handful of listings, so a single sale can move a price. Read the table as what has happened, not as a forecast.

You pay for the foil, not the card

At the very top of the whole family sit four neon ink printings of Traveling Chocobo, numbered 551a to 551d. They exist only as foils, Mana Pool lists no more than a handful of copies of each, and the regular printing of the same card costs $19.57:

Every one of the ten dearest printings in the main set is borderless, and 9 of them are special foils — neon ink, surge foils or Chocobo track foils. The cards themselves are the same as their regular printings, which trade on far more listings for a fraction of the price. Y'shtola, Night's Blessed from the Commander set is the extreme case: on 26 October 2026 its borderless surge foil cost more than a hundred times its regular printing.

Sephiroth and Cloud from the main set follow the same pattern, five printings each, all the same card:

If you want the card to play, buy the regular printing. If you want the art or the foil, those are the prices.

What players actually use

EDHREC ranks every card by how many Commander decks list it, where 1 is the most-played card in the format. The new cards from Final Fantasy that Commander players have taken to most are not the chase characters but the Crystals and a land, and they cost a fraction of the top of the set:

The most-played cards in the whole family are reprints: Commander staples that come in the Final Fantasy Commander decks, each among the twenty most-played cards in the format.

Through the Ages

All 65 cards on the Through the Ages sheet are reprints of existing cards in Final Fantasy art, and many are Commander staples — Rhystic Study is one of the fifty most-played cards in the format. Sram, Senior Edificer was the family's biggest climber between late August and 26 October 2026 among printings that started at $20 or more. The dearest five:

The four Commander decks

Final Fantasy Commander came as four decks, one for each of four Final Fantasy games, and each also came as a Collector's Edition with the same hundred cards:

  • Limit Break (Final Fantasy VII) — its dearest card on 26 October 2026 is Clever Concealment at $24.99
  • Revival Trance (Final Fantasy VI) — its dearest card on 26 October 2026 is Swiftfoot Boots at $16.11
  • Counter Blitz (Final Fantasy X) — its dearest card on 26 October 2026 is Sphere Grid at $20.36
  • Scions & Spellcraft (Final Fantasy XIV) — its dearest card on 26 October 2026 is Tataru Taru at $24.22
